Friday, June 29th, 2018 | On Thursday night, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) became the first sitting senator to call for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Until recently “Abolish ICE” was a cathartic slogan progressives chanted in response to near-daily stories about immigration agents abusing their powers. It has very rapidly entered the mainstream of the national policy debate. In just the past week: - New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio also called for abolishing ICE.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who’s running for the House on a platform that includes abolishing ICE, defeated Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) in New York’s Democratic primary. Other candidates around the country support the idea as well.
- Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) is drafting a bill to abolish ICE in the House, and multiple progressive Democrats have said they will support it.
- Nineteen special agents from the Department of Homeland Security, who work under ICE’s umbrella enforcing international financial and anti-terrorism laws, wrote a letter to Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen asking her to split ICE’s detention and deportation function off into its own entity, because its work is “unnecessarily impacted by the political nature of [ICE’s] civil immigration enforcement.”
From Brian: “Abolish ICE” is catching on because of a widespread and accurate belief that it’s a cruel, rogue agency. And even if the goal of actually abolishing the agency goes unmet, a party unified in hostility to a government agency can have a huge impact on its functioning. Republicans have channeled their antipathy towards the IRS into starving the agency of funds, which has had a huge impact on the agency’s ability to enforce tax law. A tamed ICE that wasn’t engaged in mass raids and deportations would be an improvement over what we’ve got now.
As a senior officer at Deutsche Bank, retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s son oversaw over a billion dollars in loans to Donald Trump when no other major banks would lend to him. It turns out this is not a normal connection for a president and a Supreme Court justice to have. The Capital Gazette put out a paper today, hours after a gunman murdered four journalists and a sales assistant at the paper’s offices. The staff left the opinion page intentionally blank, expressing speechlessness and to commemorate the staffers whose lives were cut short. The shooter, who previously sued the paper for defamation, was once the subject of an article in the Gazette, which described threatening and harassing messages he sent to a woman via email and Facebook. Previous reports that he “obliterated” his fingertips to remain unidentified have been refuted by local police. A federal judge has rejected Kentucky’s plan to subject Medicaid recipients to work requirements. Good. Trump has reportedly threatened to take the U.S. out of the World Trade Organization multiple times. So keep an eye on that stove! The Department of Justice has charged more than 600 people in its largest ever crackdown on health-care fraud, 162 of whom were charged for their roles in contributing to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Senate’s only three black members have introduced bipartisan legislation to make lynching a federal hate crime. “This piece of legislation sends a message that together, as a nation, we condemn the actions of those that try to divide us with violence and hate,” said Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). Remember how Michael Bloomberg pledged $80 million to flip the House for Dems? He hosted a fundraiser for Republican Rep. Peter King (R-NY) at his house last night, which is a unique strategy for electing Democrats. Democrats, we need better billionaires. Trump’s economic adviser Larry Kudlow is lying about the deficit on TV, saying “it’s coming down and it’s coming down rapidly.” Not even close to true. Drake’s new album is out. The kid is his.
On Majority 54: Jason Kander tackles America’s opioid epidemic and asks how we can fix it. This week he talks to Phil Spagnuolo, a state representative in New Hampshire, who personally struggled with opioid addiction and is now a certified recovery coach who founded his own clinic. Earlier this year, he flipped his seat from red to blue for the very first time in the history of New Hampshire. Listen →
Sleeping Giants had a few words for him: “There are nearly 2000 fucking kids who were taken from their fucking parents by the fucking government that you fucking work for, most of whom haven’t been fucking returned. And you’re going to make a fucking word the fucking thing you make noise about? Are you fucking serious?” Marco, this is the worst fucking punditry known to man. If you’re worried about the discourse, capitulating to the Human Word Toilet in Chief is a weird way of showing it. | The America We Thought We Knew Is Gone (via Slate): “Trump, a man who has repeatedly said that he only responds to consequences, has faced none. His lies meet with no institutional resistance. Quite the contrary. His decision to say outrageous, incorrect, inflammatory things has paid off handsomely: His supporters believe them, and those in power will not acknowledge that he has said anything at all. The combined effect has rendered him immune to every standard we, as a country, once shared.” From Jon Lovett: This is a sad and precise and beautiful piece everyone should read.
