Friday, June 28, 2019 | The most consequential moment of either Democratic debate this week (besides everything Marianne Williamson said) was the exchange between Kamala Harris and Joe Biden over his comments about segregationist senators, and his work with those senators to oppose forced busing. The key line: “You also worked with them to oppose busing,” Harris said. “And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bussed to school every day. And that little girl was me.” Busing was a tool the federal government used to integrate segregated schools that refused to abide by the Constitution. Biden was not a segregationist, but he wanted to leave the question of whether to force integration up to local governments. Why bring this up? For starters, she thinks he was wrong! But strategically, she was also able to show that Biden stubbornly clings to outdated views that don’t reflect where the Democratic Party is right now. How’d Biden respond? Harris essentially forced Biden to choose between saying he was wrong, or defending states’ rights in the fight for civil rights. “I did not oppose busing in America,” Biden said. “What I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education.” How’d that go over? Not great! Biden and his campaign have tried to clean up the mess in a few ways. - Biden’s communications director said, “At the time many in the African American community, in the civil rights community, were saying busing was not the best way to integrate schools.”
- Biden sent an email to his list that said “the federal government has a duty to protect the civil rights of every American” and also mentioned Barack Obama. He loves mentioning Barack Obama!
Unlike the first night of the debate, the second night may have had real consequences for the race. For a full rundown, check out our recap. | Over the past five years, the number of Americans who support the idea that small business owners should be allowed to refuse service to LGBT, atheist, Jewish, and African American people based on their “religious beliefs” has grown. According to new research from the Public Religion Research Institute, 30 percent of Americans think it’s okay to deny service to gay or lesbian people on religious grounds, 29 percent feel the same way about transgender people, 24 percent about atheists, 22 percent about Muslims, 19 percent about Jews, and 15 percent about African Americans. If you split the data by party affiliation, Republicans are “more than twice as likely than Democrats to support religious based refusals” for LGBT people, atheists, and Muslims. Exempting religious Christians from laws requiring them to treat gay people like people has been a major GOP cause over the past several years, and their support for legal discrimination against one group has spread to others. | When reporters at the G20 summit in Japan asked President Trump if he would warn Russian President Vladimir Putin not to interfere in the 2020 election, he smiled, turned to Putin, and said, "Don't meddle in the election, please." Hahaha, it’s funny because everyone knows he doesn’t mean it. He went on to joke that he and Putin should “get rid” of journalists. Since Putin took power in 2000, at least 21 journalists have been killed in Russia, but c’est la vie, murderous dictators also love to laugh. Speaking of the G20, the next summit will be hosted in Saudi Arabia by Crown Prince/journalist murderer Mohammed bin Salman in November 2020. The Supreme Court will decide whether the Trump administration can shut down DACA, which shields 800,000 young, undocumented immigrants from deportation, during its next term. Trump has tried to terminate the program (DACA-scuse me?), but federal courts have ruled that he has not presented a valid reason to do so. Senate Republicans filibustered a measure that would require the White House to receive congressional approval before launching a military strike against Iran. The white supremacist terrorist who murdered Heather Heyer when he drove his car into anti-racism protesters during the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, VA, has been sentenced to life in prison. The U.S. Women’s National Team advanced to the World Cup semifinals after beating France on the strength of Megan Rapinoe’s two goals. That’s the same Megan Rapinoe who will absolutely not go to the “fucking White House.” She also said in an interview she gets her news from Pod Save America, which is very cool, but also, like, those guys are not journalists. A Brazilian Air Force officer was caught with 86 pounds of cocaine on a Brazilian presidential plane—which is not a great look for the country’s new authoritarian president, Jair Bolsonaro, who campaigned as the candidate who could crack down on Brazil's cocaine industry. Bolsonaro was not on the plane at the time, which is too bad for him because it sounds like it was a fun flight. Jony Ive, the designer behind Apple’s iPhone, iPod, and iconic Mac computers, will leave Apple to set up his own design firm. The apple won’t fall far from Apple, though because the company is his first client. It took Kate McKinnon mere hours after last night’s debate to perfect a Marianne Williamson impression. | Reps. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) and Harley Rouda (D-CA) have announced their support for beginning an impeachment inquiry. Rouda had set an end-of-month deadline for the administration to begin cooperating with congressional investigations of President Trump’s corruption. He becomes the latest in a fast-growing number of freshman Democrats from historically Republican districts to join the push to impeach Trump. | It has been 50 years since members of New York’s gay community rebelled against the police officers who raided Stonewall Inn, an iconic gay bar in Greenwich Village. Crowds are expected to celebrate in the city and around the world this weekend to commemorate the anniversary. And New York will host WorldPride, which is expected to be one of the largest LGBTQ gatherings in history. | Did someone forward you this email? Sign up to get What A Day in your inbox!
