Wednesday, August 21, 2019 | President Trump has been trafficking in antisemitism again, accusing the overwhelming majority of American Jews of stupidity and disloyalty to Israel, while suggesting they should treat him as a God-like figure. And so far, Republicans are cool with it! No, we’re not kidding, that’s literally what happened. Here’s how it all played out. - At a White House press availability on Tuesday, Trump said American Jews who vote for Democrats show “either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” About 80 percent of U.S. Jews vote for Democrats.
- Wednesday morning, he approvingly quoted right-wing conspiracy theorist Wayne Allyn Root, who said of Trump, “the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God...But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore.”
- Later, Trump clarified his earlier remarks, telling reporters that Jewish Americans who vote Democrat are “disloyal to Israel.”
Hey, remember how the entire Republican Party spent most of the year claiming to be deeply offended by the antisemitic trope that diaspora Jews are compromised by dual loyalty? Well, none of them have been bothered by Trump’s comments in the slightest. - After Trump’s initial comments, Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Committee, insisted Trump merely meant to encourage Jews to be "true to yourself."
- When Trump clarified that, no, he in fact expects American Jews to have dual loyalties, RJC tweeted, “We take the President seriously, not literally.”
- No one of any stature in Republican politics has condemned him.
The Republican Party’s insincere concern for Jews is an outrage on its own, made worse by the fact that it’s an act they’ve put on largely to scapegoat Muslim members of Congress for partisan gain. But what Trump has said here is far worse and more dangerous than anything we’ve heard from any Democrats in their criticisms of the Israeli government and Israel lobby. Trump managed to get the hashtag #disloyalJews trending on Twitter, and his approving invocation of the “second coming” calls to mind the Biblical rapture, in which Jews, having been returned to Israel, face a choice between accepting Christ or eternal damnation. Not great. Not great at all. Reminder, we probably only have one shot to renounce this garbage as a country, and make it and its enablers go away. So do what you can. | A proposed Trump administration regulation would allow immigration officials to indefinitely detain migrant families who cross the border illegally, in violation of a binding legal agreement, called the Flores settlement, that prohibits the government from detaining children for more than 20 days. The policy is scheduled to take effect in 60 days, but will almost certainly get tied up in court for longer than that because in addition to being cruel, it's also super illegal! | This week on Crooked Minis, our political director, Shaniqua McClendon, talks to Joe Bruno about the most shocking moments of the GOP election fraud hearing in NC-09 earlier this year. If you haven’t already, subscribe to Rigging North Carolina now—the special election for that seat, which remains vacant because of the fraud, will be held September 10. Basically, someone leaked his demented idea, everyone laughed at him, and rather than take the L, our Very Stable Genius created another international incident so that he could assert himself and feel better. After formally revising initial data, the Labor Department analysts now believe there are over 500,000 fewer jobs in the United States than they thought there were—a much-larger-than-normal downward revision, and another indication that the economy is weakening and may be headed for recession. The Amazon is burning and Brazil’s right-wing conspiracy-theorist president has suggested subversive non-governmental organizations might have started the fires to hurt his presidency and Brazil’s image. Sound familiar? Bernie Sanders has unveiled a sweeping labor-rights platform that would require employers to show cause before terminating workers, extend union-negotiated labor standards across entire employment sectors, require employers to recognize unions once the majority of their workers agree to form one, and abolish “right to work” laws that allow anti-union workers to opt out of paying union dues. On Tuesday, a reluctant Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL) announced her support for impeachment proceedings, calling it a “tragedy for our country” necessitated by Trump’s lawlessness. Today, Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) joined her. Together they bring the number of Democrats who publicly support an impeachment inquiry to 127. Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) has vetoed legislation that would have required sheriffs to cooperate with federal immigration officials whether their enforcement actions were in the interest of North Carolina communities or not. When you vote, it matters! Another one. If Democrats win the election in 2020, Trump will be the second Republican president in a row to bequeath his Democratic successor trillion-dollar deficits. ABC has signed aphasic liar Sean Spicer for the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars. We won’t be watching, and we encourage everyone else not to watch either. | A bunch of assholes in Idaho have apparently been chasing around and menacing buses that transport the children of seasonal and migrant workers to and from early-childhood education programs in Boise. To keep the children safe from these racists, officials will now remove signs designating the buses part of the "Migrant and Seasonal Head Start" program, tint the windows on the buses, add security cameras to the buses, and shore up safety at Head Start centers. | Buying life insurance is easy.
