Friday, September 13, 2019 | Did you miss some or all of last night’s debate? We got you covered! Julian Castro repeatedly attacked the frontrunner, Joe Biden. - First, after Biden misstated one detail of his health care plan, Castro seemed to imply that the former vice president is senile, repeatedly asking him, “Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago?”
- Second, he criticized Biden for touting his relationship with President Obama whenever it helps him politically, but downplaying the relationship on more contentious issues like immigration, repeating a line of criticism that Cory Booker used in the last debate.
Castro might’ve thought he was going in for the kill, but it played out more like a murder-suicide. A post-debate poll sponsored by FiveThirtyEight and Ipsos shows viewers soured badly on Castro based on his performance, far more than they soured on Biden. Biden’s race answer really was odd and bad. Several candidates praised Beto O’Rourke for the community work he did in El Paso, TX, after a white nationalist murdered 22 people there last month. O’Rourke built on that praise with the boldest answer of the night. “Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” he said. The viewing audience responded better to O’Rourke than to any other candidate. A notoriously creepy Texas state representative, on the other hand, responded by threatening to kill him. Very nice. Pete Buttigieg answered a question about resiliency with a moving story about the challenges he faced coming out of the closet. Andrew Yang announced he would give a “freedom dividend” of $1,000 a month for a year to 10 people in what might have been an illegal gimmick to get people to sign up on his website. Of the three leading candidates, Biden, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, only Warren improved her standing among viewers, and she did so significantly. O’Rourke’s shift in net favorability was +8.6, but she was right behind him at +7.5. | AND WE'RE BACK with Lovett or Leave It! Tonight the show's coming to you live from Radio City (as you may have heard... what can we say, we're excited). Don't miss the episode, out Saturday. | A New York federal appeals court has revived a lawsuit against President Trump which alleges that his profits from his hotels in New York and Washington, DC, illegally violate the Constitution’s anti-corruption clauses—known as the emoluments clauses. The panel found that a lower court had wrongfully dismissed the suit on standing grounds, and sent it back to that judge to hear the case on the merits. Oh, speaking of, the Air Force says it has lodged crews at Trump’s resort in Turnberry, Scotland up to 40 times since 2015, significantly increasing its overnight stops there after signing a contract with an airport over 20 miles away towards the end of the Obama administration. There are many, many other, more affordable hotels closer to that airport than Trump’s resort. CNN and the New York Times will co-host the next Democratic debate on October 15 and possibly 16 (bracing ourselves already). CNN anchors Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett, along with New York Times National Editor Marc Lacey will moderate. So far, 11 candidates have qualified. A tropical storm system could hit the same northern islands of the Bahamas that Hurricane Dorian just destroyed this weekend. The vape industry might sue the Trump administration’s proposed ban on all flavored e-cigarettes in order to keep two flavors—mint and menthol. They argue that these flavors resemble those of cigarettes. Actress Felicity Huffman will spend 14 days in jail for her role in the notorious Varsity Blues college admissions scandal. The court also ordered her to pay a $30,000 fine, serve one year of supervised release, and do 250 hours of community service. She was the first parent involved in the bribery and cheating scandal to be sentenced, and pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to get her daughter’s standardized test answers changed in order to increase her score. Nearly 150 CEOs of many of the nation’s largest companies sent Senate leaders a letter calling on them to extend background checks to all gun sales and stronger "red flag" laws, which would let courts temporarily confiscate weapons from people who may pose a threat to themselves or others. The State Department’s internal watchdog will recommend disciplinary action against Brian Hook, a GOP hack who reportedly had State Department employees fired for political reasons. Naturally, Trump might promote him to be his fourth national security adviser. | Somehow many ABC stations decided it was perfectly fine to air an ad during last night’s debate that showed a burning image of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), while comparing her politics to those that fueled a genocide in Cambodia. The ad, funded by a GOP PAC, featured Elizabeth Heng—a Republican who lost a house bid near Fresno, CA, last year. AOC responded, “Republicans are running TV ads setting pictures of me on fire to convince people they aren’t racist. Life is weird!” | Did someone forward you this email?
