Monday, September 16, 2019 | Two New York Times reporters have corroborated a damning allegation of sexual abuse againt Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and brought a new allegation to light. Several prominent Democrats have responded by calling on the House to impeach Kavanaugh for lying to Congress. Here’s what you need to know. What happened? In their forthcoming book, which the Times excerpted this weekend, reporters Kate Kelly and Robin Pogrebin detail new evidence that supports an allegation that a woman named Deborah Ramirez made to the New Yorker in 2018. During the Kavanaugh confirmation fight, Senate Republicans only allowed one of Kavanaugh’s accusers, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, to testify publicly. That effectively silenced Ramirez, who claims Kavanaugh thrust his penis in her face at a party when the two were undergraduates at Yale in the 1980s. Kavanaugh denied the allegation outright and insisted that if the allegation were true, it would have been the subject of gossip at the time. Kelly and Pogrebin have confirmed that the incident it was, in fact, the talk of the dorm. What else happened? The reporters also reveal that the Senate and FBI ignored a different credible allegation from one of Kavanaugh’s classmates. Max Stier, who now runs a nonpartisan nonprofit that helps officials from both parties adhere to good government practices, told senators he’d witnessed Kavanugh force a different classmate to touch his penis at a party, though the reporters say the classmate in question has no recollection of the incident. Another witness recalled that the same alleged victim ultimately transferred out of her residential college at Yale because of Kavanaugh. The FBI never investigated this allegation. How has the political establishment reacted? Somewhat depressingly! - Back on the negative side, most Democratic leaders have been silent about the allegations, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler suggested he’s too busy kinda/sorta impeaching President Trump to impeach Kavanaugh. (Note to Democrats: this is another reason why it was bad to waste months not holding Trump accountable for anything.)
Bottom line: A few things that were clear before are now clearer: 1) Kavanaugh lied over and over again to the Senate during his confirmation process; 2) Senate Republicans and the White House rigged their background investigations to bury damning allegations about him; 3) We can’t just sweep this under the rug. Senate Republicans and the Trump administration continue circle wagons around Kavanaugh, so Democrats should investigate now and commit to holding him to account once they’ve taken back the Senate and White House. | House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff has subpoenaed President Trump’s acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire to turn over a whistleblower complaint that he has been illegally withholding from Congress, apparently on White House orders. Schiff says he only learned about the complaint because the intelligence community’s internal watchdog, who deemed the anonymous whistleblowers allegation an “urgent concern,” wrote a letter alerting key congressional leaders to the situation. So what's the administration hiding? We don’t know, but it appears to pertain to an abuse of spying power undertaken by Trump or a senior White House official. And it’s incredibly disturbing, as Schiff’s extraordinary public comments suggest, that the DNI along with the Justice Department and possibly Trump’s White House are engaged in an illegal effort to protect the president and hide this “urgent” misconduct from Congress. This is a five-alarm scandal playing out in public, and deserves intense media scrutiny. | Vote Save America is partnering with Stacey Abrams’s voting rights organization, Fair Fight, to help raise the funds we need for Fair Fight 2020. After the attack rattled the global oil market, Trump said the U.S. was “locked and loaded” and “waiting to hear from the Kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under what terms we would proceed!” (We should note that Saudi royals have funneled millions of dollars to Trump through his properties since he became president.) Iraninan-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack over the weekend. Trump has not provided evidence for the claim that the attack originated in Iran. The Saudi government claims its initial investigation shows the weapons were Iranian, but they have not definitively blamed Iran, and have called on international experts to examine the evidence. | Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Hustlers provides reason for hope, even if movies about New York City strippers who drug and steal from their wealthy clients aren’t normally your jam.
